Brief history of belt buckles
Belts need buckle to keep them tied. People use these buckle to wear with belts. Belts are necessary for clothing but their buckles also work as a symbol of fashion. Some people do not give them any though and do not consider them an important part of their dressing. No matter what people think, they can give new style to your dressing or make it look ugly if chooses a wrong one.
They are made up of metal and are strong enough to keep the belt banded. To way to use them is that put it on one end of the belt and attach the other end to it and clutch it.
These belts and buckles are the part of clothing from Bronze Age. From that time both male and female are using them with their cloths according to trends and fashion, but the use of these items was very less in women fashion. They were the part of attire of Chinese semi nomadic people called Xiongnu; they wore them with their tunics in 2nd and 3rd century. They were the mark of standings for those people. Germanic invaders, made those buckle Scythian-Sarmatian art and had them animal patterned. Usually In those patterns animals were shown battling with each other. Normally there were two animals shown indulged in fighting. In the tome of Childeric I, king of the Franks who died in AD 481/482 one of the biggest sample of was found of these belts and buckles. Which were in rectangular shape, decorated with filigree. There are lots of these gold buckles one can see in London museum.
A fine example of a buckle of a heavy rectangular type decorated with filigree was found in the tomb of, who died in. Several 7th-century gold buckles with interlacing curvilinear patterns and cutaway tongues, now in the British Museum, London, were found in the Sutton Hoo ship burial.
They become the part of common man’s attire in early 1600s for their practical use, especially for British marine industry. After World War 1, the era was belonged to British Empire that was the time when railroads started and British navy once again gain its importance. That was the time when military forces and commercial people too started using belts with their uniforms.
The seaman invented Belt Buckle to replace the buttons which were being used till then to tie the belts because bottoms they used for belts didn’t worked well once they get soaked. They were more appropriate in rainy weather and storms to hold wet cloths and were easy to remove with cold hands.
Lot o people love to collect antiques. These buckles with historical value are one of those antique items which people love to store. Today men use them with their pants and ladies wear them just for the fashion sake. Some people says that the design of the buckle gives away a man’s fashion sense and personality.
